Launch Ceremony

On 29 December, 2005 "Focusing on the Individual Internet User" - an individual member project in Kenya funded by The Internet Society (ISOC) was launched by Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, M.P., Minister for Information and Communications to give free advisory services to internet users.

Coming 10 years since internet début in Kenya, this project added to our internet celebrations and festivities and a good enough reason to cut the internet happy birthday cake courtesy of The Savora Stanley.

In his speech, the minister said,
"We are also aware that as time has gone by, the fears of internet users have increased due to threats which include hackers, computer viruses, pornography and spyware,"

As a result of the above, the public, business and even the Government experience many problems ranging from where to obtain affordable services on how to protect themselves from internet-based threats. The situation has been made worse because many of our people do not know where to obtain services and how much such services cost.

It is because of this reason that my Ministry is happy to be associated with this Internet Society project, which aims to offer free internet-advisory services to the people of Kenya." Download Speech

We continue collaborating with Policy Makers, Ministry, and Regulator on Internet and telecommunications issues, Univeral Access, and Consumer Protection being our burning priorities.

Present at the launch was Mr. G.S. Vohra, Chairman, Sarova Group of Hotels who said,

A while ago the fibre optics were being laid around the Cape of Good Hope and the East African Governments missed a great opportunity. India took advantage and had the cable diverted to its shores. Broadband internet access has enriched that nation beyond its wildest expectations.

Internet is a communication pipeline. It is of little use if it does not help us focus on resolving our priorities. Internet has created a vast new world of openness, transparency and accessibility. It is a tool that the leadership, properly advised, how best to use this tool, can take the country forward."

The local constituency funds can be better utilized to make an enabling environment and to fund internet connectivity in rural areas. These are matters that need serious consideration from the authorities. Who knows, one day soon, some of our bright young stars may shine and become wealthy enough to obviate the necessity of donor funding.

These are the dreams for the youth to dream while we contemplate that this is a gorgeous universe of wonder and possibility. Buddha says 'The greatest truth is the present' . This is also a good starting point." Download Speech

Engaging Policy makers, Regulator, Industry and stakeholders on Education, Universal Access, especially rural connectivity, and on Consumer Protection.

Very significant Internet changes have taken place since this project was launched. For example H.E. President Mwai Kibaki issued an Executive Order for an urgent optic fibre cable to connect Kenya as soon as possible.

Focus on the individual - the individual internet user and the individual who has not yet been able to connect. Focus your attention on issues that will affect their livesand the way they use the Internet. And most of all, focus on giving them more choice and more control over this incredibly powerful, enabling technology."
